Ubuntu introduces the Heads Up Display Concept for PC Menus
Your computer desktop & standard menu could undergo a radical change if Ubuntu Linux has its way. For heavy users of the desktop PC, here's some news: Ubuntu version 12.04 LTS will include the 1st step in a major new approach to Application interfaces called the Heads Up Display (HUD). For those of you not familiar with this term, it is often found in fighter aircraft cockpits where an HUD is built in in a pilot's helmet & wherever his eye balls go, the HUD pops up, so he does not really have to keep looking at the traditional intruments panel. Explaining the concept further, Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth has said in his Blog Post that the standard computer menu has been around, unchanged for nearly 30 years. All that is about to change, at least in those PCs that use Ubuntu. The HUD basically works on intent. That means what the user, you, intend to do, while using your PC. It will thus respond according to what you plan to do next. Shorn of technicalities, what this new tech aims to do is to get rid of the step-by-step approach to a Menu & set up a direct connect between the user & his PC. In 12.04 LTS, the HUD is a smart look-ahead search through the App & system (indicator) menus, based on what can be best described as a "fuzzy logic" approach. The next step, said Mark, would be using voice commands to go to any Application in your PC Menu. Searching would get faster once voice recognition, gesture & touch were integrated, he said. Ubuntu's aim is to make it easy to talk to any application, & for any application to respond to an individual user's voice. The full integration of voice into Applications will take some time, though. But a start has been made by mapping voice onto the existing menu structures of the Apps.

Coming: Facebook's IPO on Feb 1, 2012
All Online reports including one by the venerable New York Times (NYT) seem to suggest that Social Network Facebook is most likely to file the prospectus for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Wednesday (US time). FB's IPO is one of the most anticipated event in the Web World in recent times, coming soon after the Social Gaming Site Zynga IPO. The size of the IPO in all probabilities, will not be over the US $10 billion mark, contrary to the expectations of some that its size would go pasta a staggering US $ 100 billion. Experts say certain other issues related to FB will also come out in the open after it files the papers tomorrow. Facebook will have to disclose stuff like how well its business has been performing, its growth, its profitability & most crucial of all - who owns how much of the company. According to some reports, the FB board met early Tuesday afternoon at its Silicon Valley HQ to give the go-ahead to a massive initial public offering.

It's not a Site, it's not a Blog, it's Checkthis
Blogs may be passe but now you have an Internet "product" that is trying to fill the gap between a blog & a Website. Startup Checkthis is an Online Publishing tool & Social Site all rolled in one. In the words of its designers, it stands "between nothing & a Blog". The guys running this Startup believe that the Internet is for sharing, Content, knowledge, but has invariably turned into a "spying" instrument. The Net is used, they say, more for "grabbing personal data & directing your behaviour". There are only 2 steps to Checkthis. Select a blank Web page & slapdash your Content on it including text, video, links. Then, press the Publish tab. There is no need to register for this Startup, you can log in using any of the well-known Social Networking accounts. Each Web Page gets its oqn unique, shot URL which you can then share with whomsoever you want. The Pages themselves have the option of adding an expiry date or keeping them forever. The Social Networking part comes in if you want to share the Web Page. There is an option of keeping your Page private, just in case you do not want every Tom, Dick & Harry & Mark Zuckerberg & his boys to see it on the Net. So, you can use Checkthis for putting out your thoughts on a particular subject, or for a vacancy ad or for selling something Online. Anything & everything. There are settings which you can tweak to enhance your page & even a preview option before you press that 'Publish' button.

Google reveals Bouncer, a malware scan for malware in Android Apps
Not the types you often get to see outside pubs & lounges. This particular Bouncer is the invisible type, silently scanning the waves for rogues. Security is a worrisome factor in the Smartphones market. Of late, there have been several reports of malware squirreling away your precious mobile phone data. To tackle security concerns, Google Inc has introduced Bouncer, a service that scans the Android market for malicious Apps. It has been a quiet existence so far because Bouncer has been around since the start of 2011 but it is only now that Google has revealed it. In a Blogpost, it claims Bouncer makes it easier to keep the Android Market safer while maintaining the simple process of uploading new Apps. Google claims that the number of malicious Apps downloads has gone down by 40 %. The way it works is this - after a developer has uploaded an App, Bouncer scans it for known trojans, spyware & malware & also for extraneous behavior. If any such problem is detected, it raises a red flag. In addition to using new services to help prevent malware, Google claims that other security features are already working prior to Bouncer to keep malware at bay. These include: Sandboxing: The Android platform uses this technique to put virtual walls between Apps & other software on the device. So, if you download a malicious Application, it can't access data on other parts of your phone. Permissions: Android provides a permission system to help you understand the capabilities of the Apps you install, & manage your own preferences. Malware removal: Android is designed to prevent malware from modifying the platform or hiding from you, so it can be easily removed if your device is affected.

An iPhone App called myCube that remembers what you have Searched for
Many developments have hit the Online Search. Now, there's one more. This iOS App called myCube remembers whatever you have Searched for. So, just in case you need to re-visit some of those previously Searched Sites, no sweat. myCube will remember them. This App's developer, Telmo Amaro, a mobile software guy from Portugal, says his App will work because storing the Websites one has Searched for, on a disk or bookmarking them with regular Browsers them is not practical. myCube claims to save a surfer's precious time by memorizing the relevant on-line Searches he/she has made, so saving the time it would take to repeat the Search. Users will get quick access to previously visited Websites based on relevance (which you decide) & Search words. Released in January this year, myCube is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or any other with iOS 3 version. It is available for a payment of US $0.99.
